General
What is the Real Art Roadshow (RAR)?
It is a touring contemporary New Zealand art collection that brings Real Art to schools.
Who chose the art?
A team of three curators with different experiences in the art world and with strong views on art. The requirements of teaching, history and secondary school curriculum plus the overall quality of the artworks were taken into account when choosing the artworks.
Who owns the art?
A private, non profit philanthropic enterprise called the Real Art Charitable Trust (RAT).
What is the collection worth?
A lot. The collection contains a large number of recognised New Zealand artists and the calibre of the works chosen is high. Additionally, the investment in the truck/trailer unit is also high.
Who pays for the Real Art Roadshow?
The Real Art Charitable Trust, a not for profit organisation, set up RAR. We are now looking for funding partners to help keep the mobile art galleries on the road. Please contact us if you would like to contribute, fiona@realartroadshow.co.nz
Is the art for sale?
No. These artworks have been gathered expressly for the purpose of touring schools and inspiring students. We can however provide information on where we sourced the artwork if you wish to buy something similar.
What is the difference between the Black Collection and the Silver Collection?
The Black Collection has mainly paintings and drawings. The artwork in the Silver Collection crosses a variety of genres including painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery and ceramic art.
Is the Roadshow ever open to the general public?
Infrequently. Check out the itinerary to see if we have any current public showings booked.
Does the artwork change in each trailer from year to year?
No. Because of the cost and effort involved with changing all the supporting resources the two collections remain the same for at least 10 years. Also it is likely that a school would wait two or three years for the same collection to return and by then the students will be different ones.
Teachers
How long is the Roadshow at a school?
For one full day. The mobile art gallery will arrive the night before and leave after school the next day. The trailer will be open from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm including breaks and lunchtime (if we get some support from the school staff) so parents and teachers can have a visit outside of class time.
Does RAR provide an educator for schools?
Yes. From 2011 we will have an Educator that travels with the mobile art gallery. Art teachers are still the best people to take their classes through but the Educator will be there as back up. Schools are expected to supervise and facilitate as they feel best fits their students needs. From experience students benefit most from teachers who plan lessons prior to the truck arriving.
Is the art more suitable for a particular age of student?
Any age is welcome, but we have targeted the Roadshow to assist Y11-13 NCEA art and art history students. Images of all the artworks are on this website. Schools can view the collection and assess which age groups they feel will most benefit from the Roadshow.
How many students can fit in the gallery at one time?
Ideally one class at a time (25-30 students or less). Bigger classes should be divided in two.
How long does a class need with the art?
Not less than half a period, There are over 60 works in each RAR collection and the time required to see them depends on the lesson plan a teacher prepares and how many students/classes a school would like to experience RAR. From experience years 1 – 8 enjoy a 30 min or half period visit, the older students appreciate a whole period.
Does RAR provide lesson plans?
Yes. From 2011 we now have some ideas for activities that schools can download and adapt to their needs. (insert the link here). RAR also provides a head of time all the resources to support the Roadshow ahead of the visit so teachers can build their lesson plans to suit their students. The main resources are: The Big Book of Essays, artist interviews and this website. The Educator is also there as backup.
Will the Real Art Roadshow visit a school annually?
No. We would love to, but there are more than 2500 secondary schools and we can only visit about 50 per term!
Can schools open to the public or wider community?
Yes, schools may wish to allocate a period during school time to invite guests or the general public to the gallery. Please consult with the Educator and include this information in the timetable that the Educator receives.
Who do I contact to get the Real Art Roadshow to come to our school?

Technical
What kind of access does a school have to provide to receive the Roadshow?
For access the driver needs 10m to get the truck and trailer into a school and 25m of manoeuvring length. When opened up, the trailer (without the truck) measures 17m long and 8.5m wide.
Does the Real Art Roadshow have public liability insurance in the event the trailer damages school property or injures students or staff?
Yes.
Does the school have any liability in the event of damage to the art and/or vehicle while on school property?
No.
Is the school required to provide security after hours?
No. The trailer is alarmed and monitored by RAR. Plus the Driver or Educator will be on site the whole time.
Does the school need to provide power?
No. We have our own generator. But if we could run a power cord to a single or three phase plug that makes the RAR experience quieter and this is usually appreciated by everyone.
Have the Roadshow contractors/employees been cleared to work in schools?
Yes. Our drivers and Educators have been police checked.
What happens in the event of an emergency in the gallery?
Our Driver or Educator will evacuate the gallery and deal with any emergency. We also have extinguishers and a first aid kit onboard.
Is the gallery heated?
Yes. And air conditioned.
Does the trailer provide for wheelchair or mobility scooter access?
Yes. We have a ramp and there is plenty of space to move around inside.
