General
What is the Real Art Roadshow (RAR)?
It is a touring contemporary art collection that brings Real Art to schools.
Who chose the art?
A team of three curators with different experiences in the art world and with strong views on art. The requirements of teaching, history and secondary school curriculum were taken into account when choosing the artworks.
Who owns the art?
A private, non profit philanthropic enterprise called the Real Art Charitable Trust (RAT).
What is the collection worth?
A lot. The collection contains a large number of recognised New Zealand artists and the calibre of the works chosen is high. Additionally, the investment in the truck/trailer unit is also high.
Who pays for the Real Art Roadshow?
The Real Art Charitable Trust a not for profit organisation, set up RAR. We are now looking for sponsorship partners to help keep the mobile galleries on the travelling to schools and the wider community in the future and for years to come. Please contact us if you would like to contribute, tanya@realartroadshow.co.nz
Is the art for sale?
No. These artworks have been gathered expressly for the purpose of touring schools and inspiring students. We can however provide information on where we sourced the artwork if you wish to buy something similar.
What is the difference between the Black Collection and the Silver Collection?
The Black Collection has mainly paintings and drawings. The artwork in the Silver Collection crosses a variety of genres including painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery and ceramic art.
Is the Roadshow ever open to the general public?
Yes. It is often located in town squares during the school holidays. Check out the itinerary.
Does the artwork change in each trailer from year to year?
No. Because of the effort involved with changing the gallery layout and all the supporting resources. Also it is likely that a school would wait three years for the same collection to return and the students will by then be different ones.
Can I hire the Real Art Roadshow for other events?
Yes as long as timing fits in with current activity. Please contact joy@realartroadshow.co.nz
Teachers
How long is the Roadshow at a school?
Generally schools receive RAR for two full days. If a school is booked for a Monday-Tuesday slot then the trailer is delivered Friday evening, parked over the weekend and set up for first class Monday morning. If a school is booked for a Thursday-Friday slot, it arrives about second period Wednesday. Once set up the trailer is not moveable until it leaves the school. The truck returns to tow the trailer away after school finishes on the second day.
Does RAR provide a facilitator or art educator for schools?
No. The driver/host sets up, welcomes and outlines rules of behaviour. RAR provides for free the artworks, the back-up website, the Big Book OF Essays and DVDs. These are posted to schools well in time for preparation before the visit. Schools are expected to supervise and facilitate as they feel best fits their students needs. From experience students benefit most from teachers who plan lessons prior to the truck arriving.
Is the art more suitable for a particular age of student?
Any age is welcome, but we have targeted the Roadshow to assist Y11-13 NCEA art and art history students. Images of all the artworks are on this website. Schools can view the collection and assess which age groups they feel will most benefit from the Roadshow.
How many students can fit in the gallery at one time?
Ideally one class at a time (25-30 students or less). Bigger classes should be divided in two.
How long does a class need with the art?
Not less than half a period, There are over 60 works in each RAR collection and the time required to see them depends on the lesson plan a teacher prepares and how many students/classes a school would like to experience RAR. However, enough resources are provided to fill a whole period.
Does RAR provide lesson plans?
No, it is up to teachers to plan their own lessons. But RAR does provide all the resources to support the Roadshow ahead of the visit. The main resources are: The Big Book Of Essays, artist interviews and this website. These are available with a lead in time enabling teachers to develop their own personalised lesson plans.
Will the Real Art Roadshow visit a school annually?
No. We would love to, but there are more than 600 secondary schools and only two mobile art galleries. This means we can only get to about 80 schools a year.
Can schools open to the public or wider community?
Yes, schools may wish to allocate a period during school time to invite guests or the general public to the gallery. Please consult with the operator and include this information in the timetable that the operator receives. The galleries are also open to the wider community during school holidays in public places, please check the itinerary.
Can we be open at break, lunchtime or after school?
We open during school period time only. Our staff are sole operators and have many activities to perform outside of these hours to keep the programme on the road. However, we will consider opening these hours if the school provides security and a facilitator during this time and it is cleared with the driver.
Who do I contact to get the Real Art Roadshow to come to our school?
Joy Wilkie our Schools Coordinator can be contacted on joy@realartroadshow.co.nz
Technical
What kind of access does a school have to provide to receive the Roadshow?
For access the driver needs 10m to get the truck and trailer into a school and 25m of manoeuvring length. When opened up, the trailer (without the truck) measures 17m long and 8.5m wide.
Does the Real Art Roadshow have public liability insurance in the event the trailer damages school property or injures students or staff?
Yes.
Does the school have any liability in the event of damage to the art and/or vehicle while on school property?
No.
Is the school required to provide security after hours?
No. The trailer is alarmed and monitored by RAR.
Does the school need to provide power?
No. We have our own generator. But if we could run a power cord to a single or three phase plug that makes the RAR experience quieter and this is usually appreciated by everyone.
Have your contractors/employees been cleared to work in schools?
Yes. Our drivers have been police checked.
What happens in the event of an emergency in the gallery?
Our hosts will evacuate the gallery and deal with any emergency. We have extinguishers and a first aid kit onboard.
Is the gallery heated?
Yes. And air conditioned.
Does the trailer provide for wheelchair or mobility scooter access?
Yes. We have a ramp and there is plenty of space to move around inside.
